School Entrance Preparation
Private TuitionAcademic, assessment and interview preparation for entry to leading UK independent schools.
Treberys Private provides one-to-one school entrance preparation for students applying to independent day and boarding schools across the UK.
Support may include English and Mathematics, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, computerised pre-tests, Common Entrance, school-specific papers, scholarship assessments and interviews. We prepare students across the principal entry points, including 7+, 8+, 11+, 13+ and 16+.
Each programme is built around the individual child and the schools to which they are applying, with tuition available in London, internationally and online.
Preparing independent school entry
There is no single examination or admissions process shared by the UK's independent schools.
Requirements can differ substantially according to the child's age, the school being considered and the stage at which an application is made. One school may use written English and Mathematics papers; another may rely partly on computerised reasoning assessments, interviews or school-specific tests. At later entry points, subject papers, scholarship examinations and existing academic results may also form part of the process.
Preparation should therefore begin with the schools themselves.
Treberys Private considers the target schools, entry point, assessment format and admissions timetable before determining what academic support is actually required. For some students this means building core English and Mathematics over an extended period. For others, the priority is familiarity with a particular pre-test, improving reasoning skills, preparing for an interview or refining examination technique.
At the younger entry points, preparation should remain age appropriate and measured. Academic development is more valuable than excessive drilling, particularly when a child is preparing for their first formal admissions process.
For 11+ and 13+, preparation may involve a broader combination of curriculum work, reasoning, computerised assessments, school-specific papers and interviews. Families requiring more detailed support at these entry points can also explore our 7+, 11+ and 13+ preparation.
At 16+, students are often assessed at greater subject depth. Schools may consider GCSE performance alongside subject-specific entrance papers and interviews, particularly where applicants are seeking entry into a competitive sixth form.
For international students, entrance preparation may additionally involve UKiset, English-language assessment or academic bridging between different curricula before entry to a British school.
The objective throughout is not simply to prepare a child for an examination, but to ensure the preparation reflects the real admissions process ahead.
How we support students
Academic foundations
Targeted work in English, Mathematics and other relevant subjects to ensure the student has the underlying knowledge required before examination practice becomes the focus. Preparation is adapted to the child's age, current school and target entry point.
Pre-tests & reasoning
Preparation for computerised pre-tests, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning where required. Tutors introduce the relevant question types, develop accuracy and pattern recognition, and build familiarity with working effectively under time constraints.
School-specific assessments
Preparation shaped around the actual requirements of the schools being considered, including written papers, online assessments and individual subject tests. Programmes can be adjusted as applications progress and further assessment information becomes available.
Common Entrance & 13+
Support for students preparing for 13+ entry, including the ISEB Common Pre-Test, Common Entrance and school-specific assessments where relevant. Tuition can develop over a longer period alongside the student's normal school curriculum.
16+ & sixth-form entry
Subject-specific preparation for entry into competitive sixth forms, including school entrance papers and interviews. Support reflects the student's intended A Level subjects, existing GCSE programme and the individual requirements of the target school.
Interviews & scholarships
Age-appropriate interview preparation and, where required, academic scholarship support. Tutors help students communicate naturally, think independently and approach more demanding assessments with confidence rather than relying on rehearsed responses.
Finding the right school entrance tutor
The tutor required for school entrance preparation depends heavily on the child's age, academic profile and the admissions process ahead.
A younger child preparing for 7+ or 8+ requires someone experienced in primary education who can maintain confidence and curiosity while introducing unfamiliar assessment demands. An older student preparing for 16+ may instead require specialist subject knowledge at GCSE level and experience of competitive sixth-form entry.
We therefore consider the child, target schools, entry point, assessment formats and preparation time before recommending a tutor.
Where several elements require support, Treberys Private can coordinate more than one specialist while maintaining a single point of oversight for the family.
For families concentrating specifically on the principal preparatory and senior-school entry points, our 7+, 11+ & 13+ Tuition page provides more detailed guidance.
School entrance preparation in London & internationally
Treberys Private prepares students for UK independent-school entry in London and internationally.
International families often begin preparation while their child remains at school overseas. Online tuition allows the programme to start well before relocation or travel to the UK and can continue as application timelines develop.
Where students are moving from American, IB or other international curricula, preparation may also address differences in subject content and the academic expectations of British schools.
London-based families may choose in-person, online or blended arrangements depending on the child, tutor and timetable.
Preparation within the wider admissions process
Entrance preparation is most effective when it reflects a sensible school strategy rather than operating independently of it.
The appropriate level of academic preparation depends partly on the schools selected, the competitiveness of the application and whether those schools are genuinely suitable for the individual child.
Treberys Private's School Placements service can sit alongside tuition where a family requires support with school selection, applications, admissions timelines, visits, assessments and the eventual transition.
Families who already know where they are applying can engage us solely for entrance preparation, which remains part of our wider Private Tuition service.
